Cyclospora - The Parasite: What To Expect From Your Urgent Care Visit

July 21, 2026

We at CareFull MD in Beacon, NY want to prepare you for Cyclospora if you are experiencing symptoms. Please do not hesitate to come in to our Urgent Care to seek treatment for symptoms. Ultimately, you will want to be in the care of your Primary Care physician for the prescription of the test and of the antibiotic. CDC Guidance is here.
Please see below for our process.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually begin about one week after becoming infected (ranging from 2 days to 2 weeks or more). Without treatment, symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to a month or longer. If you have symptoms, stay well-hydrated.
Watery diarrhea, especially lasting more than a few days
Fatigue
Loss of appetite

Testing

Do not bring fecal specimens to our office. There is no direct, in-house test available at CareFull MD. For your best interest and care plan, we want you to get that prescription for that test from your Primary Care provider. If our provider deems that you should get tested, we will refer you to your Primary Care physician. From there, your Primary Care physician will also evaluate you, and order the test if they decide to.

The prescription test is mailed to you, that you then send to a lab postmarked on the test box. Getting results will take about one week. If result is positive for Cyclospora, then you will keep seeing your Primary Care provider for continued care and possible prescription from your Primary Care provider for the special antibiotic.

Treating

If you are showing symptoms, regardless of testing, our provider will give you a care plan. One of the most important things you can do is to stay hydrated. Drink fluids with sodium and electrolytes.

Take care, and see you soon to get you feeling better.
